If you were thinking the big news out of Valcourt this year was the new Freestyle, have we got a surprise for you! The Freestyle opens up the sport of snowmobiling for an entirely new segment, but the rest of the Ski-Doo lineup is far from sleeping. There are refinements and new models galore, so let’s get started:
Mach Z
For the rider that believes there is no replacement for displacement, the Mach’s 165 ponies prove that horsepower will continue to be King. New for 2006 is the Mach Z X-package, which adds race-bred features. The front shocks are piggy-back remote reservoir HPG; the rear suspension is upgraded with an HPG Take-Apart aluminum-bodied center rear shock and a C-36 Racing Clicker rear shock from the MX Zx 440 race sled. Also straight from the 440 is the lightweight racing seat and a steel-braided brake line that reduces fade. There is also a 1.25” Ripsaw option available for the Mach this year. The X-package, which will be available during spring only, features a painted tunnel, tunnel reinforcements, a Crystal Tec tail light and special graphics.
MX Z Renegade X 1000
After riding the 2005 Mach Z, we were in love with the engine, but the ride quality on rough trails left a bit to be desired. Ski-Doo answered our wishes with the new Renegade X 1000. This has the same 2-TEC 1000 SDI as the Mach Z, which pumps out about 165 horsepower. The sled also moves to the RT platform, with all the same equipment as the REV-based packages. Regardless of the engine/platform combination, all Renegade X-packages feature the exclusive 136-inch long, 16-inch wide PowderMax track, including an optional 1.75” lug for added traction and flotation in deep snow riding. In addition to a black color option, there’s a new yellow/black scheme based on the 2005 440 race sled. Upon riding the new Renegade, we feel Ski-Doo has hit one out of the park. The Renegade X 1000 has all the power of the Mach, but with superb handling and rough trail control.
MX Z 550 Fan X-Package
For 2006, there’s an outstanding new X-package at an aggressive price-point – the MX Z 550 Fan X-package. It’s a REV-based sled with Rotax 550cc fan-cooled engine and a similar features list to the liquid-cooled X-package – racer items such as tricked-out handlebars, tunnel reinforcements, fixed low windshield and the racing seat from the 440. Plus, there are high-performance HPG shocks all around. This is the first X-package available all season, and will especially appeal to riders who want a fun, super-lightweight sled with incredible handling and capability.
SC-4 Galore
For a smooth ride, exceptional control and great weight transfer, the Ski-Doo rear suspension keeps getting better and better. The SC-4 has been expanded across the Ski-Doo lineup for 2006. This Snocross-proven rear suspension, specifically-designed for driver-centered platforms, is now standard on every REV™, RT™ and RF™ platform trail sleds.
EPA Compliant Engines
The Rotax PowerTEK engines have not only proven themselves for performance, but they are also the cleanest engines built by BRP to date. All Rotax™ 800H.O. engines now benefit from the PowerTEK engine management system’s higher fuel economy, reduced emissions and crisper throttle response. All engines with PowerTEK, as well as 2-TEC™ SDI and 4-TEC™ four-stroke engines, exceed 2006-2010 U.S. EPA standards.
REVolutionary Changes
All the REV-based sleds are sporting a couple of nice improvements. For improved handling and flatter cornering, all REV-based sleds have a 1.5-inch lower front suspension set-up. A new shock calibration ensures bump-softening capacity. Also, all REV machines now have a fixed windshield, which is an all-new design to enhance wind protection and add an updated look.
Pilot Skis
Due to a recent court settlement, Ski-Doo will no longer be offering the Precision dual-runner skis. According to BRP officials, the Pilot skis has been in the works for some time and are now offered across the board on Ski-Doo snowmobiles. The trail version is the Pilot 5.7 (width and weight). These skis are the next evolution of the Precision™ dual runner skis, delivering better performance in soft snow conditions, improving bite in corners and reducing weight [two pounds per ski]. Pilot skis feature a deep center keel and carbide like a traditional ski, with an additional shorter keel and carbide on the outside. In neutral conditions the sled is steered by the center keel; in cornering the outer keel also bites to provide additional steering control. Sleds require a different left and right ski. The mountain version [Pilot 6.9] is wider for flotation and especially reduces steering effort on the trails.
New RF-Platform Tundra
The Ski-Doo Tundra™ has always been a workhorse. With its light weight and high maneuverability, the Tundra can get the job done and get into places other utility machines couldn't dream of. The first Tundra refresh since its debut in 1985, the Tundra is all-new for 2006. It is built on the new RF™ platform--based on the new Freestyle, which is derived from the REV. Like its big brother, the RF features a pyramidal frame, centralized masses and a driver-centered riding position. While it maintains the Tundra’s reputation for being economical, most systems are significantly upgraded. The rear suspension is the SC-136 with a Motion Control center shock and HPG rear shock. RER™ electronic reverse, new side bumpers, The Tundra features a new, wide blow molded plastic ski for lighter weight and better floatation.
HPV Roller Secondary Clutch
Use of the new secondary clutch that debuted on the 2005 Mach Z® is expanded for 2006. The state-of-the-art roller-type clutch delivers a giant leap in both upshifting and backshifting performance; crisp, smooth acceleration and higher top-end speed. It is also specifically designed to work hand-in-hand with Rotax Electronic Reverse™.
This new secondary is a roller-type with three large rollers fixed to the inner sheave. It eliminates free play in extreme backshifting situations for smoother and quieter operation. A double-helix cam [encapsulated roller] is designed to engage the RER in just two-degrees of rotation – a huge improvement over the HPV secondary.
Reaching the Summit
If there’s one thing that keeps people riding the deep stuff in the mountains, it’s the fun factor. But any mountain rider will tell you that it takes a lot of skill – and a lot of hard work sometimes. So the key to building a great mountain sled is to make it easier to ride. The new Summit sleds boast a number of changes for 2006 including the new 6.9 Pilot dual-runner skis, HPV roller secondary, a link-type swaybar, fixed windshield and a new racing seat. The new RT-type seat weighs 1.3 pounds less than the 2005 version and is more sculpted for higher comfort. For 2006, BRP engineers initiated a weight reduction program for Summits, and eliminated 15 pounds from the Adrenaline and Highmark packages, and 20 pounds from the X-packages.
GSX Models
For trail riding comfort, the Ski-Doo® GSX™ has the segment covered. It starts will all the ingredients of the acclaimed MX Z® sled for ultra precise, ultra easy handling. Then the suspensions are refined for smoothness and nearly every luxury and convenience feature is mixed in. It sacrifices nothing for a smooth controlled ride and no-hassle ownership experience. Finally, the GSX gets a sophisticated look from its coloration and decals.
For 2006, all GSX packages get upgrades for improved handling and ride quality. Specifically designed for driver-centered platforms, the SC-4™ rear suspension better controls weight transfer for sharper cornering and improved bump absorption. A shorter shock stroke and new calibration lower the front ride height 1.5-inches for more controlled, flatter turning without sacrificing capability. The new Pilot 5.7 dual-runner skis improve cornering precision in all snow conditions [especially fluffy snow] and virtually eliminates darting. All packages also get fixed windshields for simplicity, wind protection, and sleeker styling.
GTX Models
When you head out for a day or longer on the trails with a partner, you want to think about one thing – the ride. Not whether the engine will start, not fatigue, not running out of fuel, not feeling cold. Just the unmatched beauty of the outdoors in winter.
Changes in the GTX models include a lowered front ride height, new Pilot 5.7 dual-runner skis and a new, more comfortable brake lever. The GTX Fan also includes a tach for 2006 and both the Sport and Limited models are fitted with the SC-4 rear skid for the ultimate in comfort. The GTX Limited also includes a HPG rear shock.
Expedition
It’s for the owner that wants a sled for multiple recreational and work uses. Consider the winter-lover with a backwoods cabin: he might use the Expedition for touring the trails with a passenger in the morning, explore terrain off-trail in deep snow in the afternoon, and haul a load of firewood in the evening. New for 2006 are the new-shaped brake lever and electric fuel and temperature gauges.
In summary, the big news is the MX Z 1000 Renegade X and of course the Freestyle, but not everyone is an Entry Level or 1000cc buyer. The rest of the lineup improvements fills the voids and proves that Ski-Doo doesn’t plan on resting any time soon
