The Alberta Snowmobile Association hopes a weekend incident near Morinville will serve as a wake-up call.
Shane Verbeek, 30, has been missing since early Sunday, on Sandy Lake. The search for him was continuing as of early Tuesday afternoon.
The snowmobile association says snowmobilers have to be smart about where they're riding and how they're riding, just the same as if they were driving a vehicle. "The Alberta Snowmobile Association has a 'smart riders campaign' that we'd like the snowmobiling community as a whole to follow," says Darryl Copithorne. "There's a number of mandates that we promote for safe snowmobiling. One of them is that you make sure the ice is sufficient to carry a safe weight before you go on."
Copithorne says his organization can make recommendations, but people have to choose for themselves if they want to snowmobile in a safe and responsible manner.
There were no snowmobile fatalities in Alberta last year.(bk/bp)
